Did you know that Microsoft and IBM spend 21% to 23% of revenue on marketing and sales? Apple spends a similar amount too? And these companies spend about 15% on R&D. And these companies are the longest lasting of almost all technology companies.
Microsoft and IBM have never been accused of having the best technology. But all of the best technology companies have either gone under, or been bought. The above three companies have good technology, technology that people want to buy, but not necessarily state-of-the-art.
What they all have though, is great marketing. So, if you want to grow your business, you need great marketing too. And to get great marketing you need to spend a minimum amount of revenue on marketing and sales.
You also need analytics and good testing metrics so you don’t waste your money. But if you truly want your company to be a market leader, then you better spend money, but spend it wisely.
